If your ever in a situation where someone wants to play you something from their ipod on your stereo, you are often stuck with limited connection options. You can run a mini-jack to RCA from the headphone port – which will make you double amplify your signal, which is going to give you less then primo sound.. or you can spend a lot of money on something like an apple universal dock, or some of the many other superior options. This is a better option from a sound quality perspective because they tap into the signal line out unamplified and charge your pod, but they are expensive. It really depends on if you want your solution to be portable.

I picked up one of these cheapies because I often connect my ipod to a few different stereos, and a headphone setup, and I didn’t want to buy a dock for each one.

Let me first say that this thing works great. I just got it on 3/28/11, and have had no problems with it at all so far. It is not stated clearly, but this does indeed have a USB port and a 3.5mm mini stereo port. I have only used the 3.5mm port so far. Sound quality is clear. no signs of any connection problems.

The bad: The build quality on this thing is not stellar. It does indeed feel like a little piece of plastic with a dock stuck inside. There are no markings on the case like the higher priced version, and it does not lock in place like a traditional ipod dock. Now, this locking feature is really no big deal to me, because once I plug it in, I set it down. There is very little chance it will come loose and fall out.

so, in conclusion, I am quite happy with this purchase. It does what its supposed to, and it doesnt break the bank. Is it equal to the higher priced version also on amazon? I cant say. my guess is that the other version is of better build quality, with overall nicer esthetics. but is it worth more than double this one? In the end, its about function, and I have had no problems thus far. I will edit this review if the thing falls apart, or if there are other problems.

    EDIT:

-having used this for a while now, I can say that it works fine, but the non locking plug has turned out to be a real pain. definitely a downside. It does indeed tend to slip out, even from the weight of the cord if its positioned just right. if your never going to pick up your ipod or move it, this is great. But I’ll probably end up ordering a different kind in the future. Dropped the rating by 2 stars.

Seeing how few reviews there are for this great product, I felt compelled to write a fair and honest review. This little adapter is so worth the money. I never realized the headphone jack on my ipod touch audio wasn’t optimal. I previously had purchased the Monster THXIMINI8 1/8 stereo to RCA stereo adapter and thought the sound was clear but low volume. I hate having to monkey with the volume on the ipod and the receiver. I read online about using the dock connector for audio but didnt realize this micro usb adapter even existed. Let me tell you, the sound is so much an upgrade and its really easy to use. Just plug the micro usb adapter into your ipod, plug in the headphone jack into the adapter and it even includes a usb input slot to keep your ipod charged while hooked up to your receiver! How cool is that? The adapter itself is shiny black, maybe about half inch long and wide and simply works. I originally was skeptical because of the low price and there is another one here that is priced much more and basically the same thing. Now, the volume is controlled strictly by my receiver and has nothing to do with the ipod. I dont know how durable it is, but I dont plan to plug and unplug the adapter, Im leaving it attached to my 1/8 (3.5 mm) adapter at all times and only plugging the combined micro usb line out and Monster 1/8 to RCA into my ipod whenever needed.

I bought this to enable charging an iPod touch in my car with a micro USB adapter and to improve the signal from the iPod to my tape adapter in my car stereo. Is device handles both of those tasks like a champ and for a great process, making it a terrific value.

Update: It was too good to be true, and broke not too much after I wrote the above, even though I was very gentle with it. Sigh.
