Great basic, bombproof rain jacket, December 28, 2011

Zaw Banjito (Seattle, WA USA) –

You want a proper rain jacket nowadays, you basically have three choices: Look like you are going ultralight camping, look like you are going snowboarding, or look like you are going to do some road construction. There’s an occasional subset where you might pass for a fisherman. There’s nothing wrong with any of these choices, but if you want the old feeling of a heavy raincoat that keeps you bone dry, won’t rip or lose its special coating if you brush up against a wall, and looks good with everyday clothes, then the Mandal jacket does pretty well. It is pretty basic, devoid of any bells and whistles, but still manages to feel more expensive than it should. It is all but bombproof, with heavy plastic and satisfying metal snaps instead of a zipper. The snaps are covered with a flap and I’ve not had any problem with water getting in.

A few things you might want to keep in mind:

There is no drawcord about the waist, so it always hangs loosely, which I find provides some ventilation, but also requires you to stay upright if you want to stay totally dry. I romped in the snow a bit this winter and got some up my back. Not a big deal; how often does rain come from below?

A more serious issue is that the drawcord for the hood isn’t so good. You need to really haul to close it around your face, and then the seal isn’t great. The hood is pretty spacious and does a good job, but if you often experience fast, driving rain in your face this could be a problem.

There are two basic flap pockets at the front, but you can’t really stick your hands in them, nor can you really get your hands underneath the thing or even into your pants pockets as it hangs below the waist. So you’ll probably need gloves, or expect your hands to get wet.

It is, needless to say, not breathable. The cult of breathability is a little bit fanatical at this point, but there’s no denying that this is a sauna. I took it for some casual snowshoeing and after a couple of hours there was more moisture inside than outside. So no, not exactly “performance wear”. The upside is that afterwards I cleaned it with a hose. Keep it for walking around and yard work and it’ll be fine.

These things are all minor problems, but they haven’t really affected my use or enjoyment of the jacket. And also there’s the price. At this price I might overlook much greater failings. A five star jacket!

It is relatively inexpensive (especially compared to high-tech gear), easy to put on, and definitely waterproof. I also have the matching bib overalls. This and a pair of rain boots, I never get wet. I use it to work around the house during the heavy rains.
